Fax numbers were replaced by e-mails a few years ago and now it seems that the time for yet another change has come. One in every five businesses worldwide will start using social networking in place of e-mail as a primary vehicle of interpersonal communications, says IT research firm Gartner. It has also predicted that nearly half the companies in the world will start using services like Twitter in the next couple of years.

These predictions are a part of the Gartner report which covers five social software predictions for 2010. Because of the overwhelming popularity of the microblogging service Twitter, many organizations are looking for an "enterprise Twitter" to provide the microblogging functionality with more security and control features for internal use between employees. The advantage here is the same as that for the general consumers, which is the very quick response received for any questions, to quickly find out what their colleague is up to, or as a collaboration tool to simply bounce ideas.

"However, it will be very difficult for microblogging as a standalone function to achieve widespread adoption within the enterprise. Twitter's scale is one of the reasons for its popularity," said Jeffrey Mann, research vice-president for Gartner. "When limited to a single enterprise, that same scale is unachievable, reducing the number of users who will find it valuable. Mainstream enterprises are unlikely to adopt standalone, single-purpose microblogging products," he added.

Gartner says that social networking will prove to be more effective than e-mail for certain business activities such as status updates and location.
